Day 14
Climate protection in agriculture

Agriculture is damaging the climate - this is the message that is being spread through the media. Cows that release climate-damaging gases into the air when they fart and burp, farmers who over-fertilize their fields and farms that use more energy than they produce. Some people are already talking about agriculture as a "climate killer". What can be done about it? Close farms, ban agriculture? Hardly... In order to operate agriculture in a climate-friendly way and produce food in a climate-friendly way, it is very important to recognize and analyze the individual structures of a farm. There are many ways to reduce energy consumption and save greenhouse gases. The challenge is to find the right measures for a farm.

Climate protection in agriculture
need
Analysis and advice on climate protection on farms in southern Germany.
activity
Regional NGO analyses and advises farmers on climate protection on their farms.
Measurable performance
Number of companies that were analyzed and advised. Concrete action plans for climate protection were drawn up and implementation prepared.
Result
Each company that receives advice implements measures that save 10 - 20% of GHG emissions. This means that at least 50,000 kg of CO₂ are saved on each company.
Systemically relevant impact
In the long term, the advice will lead to more climate protection in agriculture and to a better understanding of the interrelationships.

Day 14 Day 14
The good deed

Agriculture has changed significantly in recent years. While the number of farms is decreasing, the amount of products produced is increasing - the remaining farms are becoming larger and more efficient (BMEL, 2014). This is accompanied by increased use of energy and often also an increasing release of climate-damaging gases.
