Day 15
Malnutrition of children in Uganda

2011 in Uganda: Stanley is one of the driving forces behind the construction of the Namayumba Epicenter - a community development center. He is here every day to oversee the progress of the construction. Today, all of his children go to preschool or school here, receive a balanced school meal and health care. Stanley worked to ensure this during the construction! In the Epicenter, around 18,000 people from a total of 24 nearby villages join forces to jointly promote the development of their region. This structure facilitates individual access to general resources and strengthens people's assertiveness with the local government. The Epicenter building, which the population base itself builds and manages, is the visible sign of the community initiatives. It can be reached on foot, i.e. no more than 10-12 km from the most remote settlement. It offers a schoolroom, a health center, a kindergarten, grain stores and a small bank for microcredits.

background

Uganda is a fertile country in Central Africa on the northern shore of Lake Victoria. 80% of the population lives from agriculture. The average age of the population is 15 years. Despite its natural wealth, Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world. Agriculture, which is sometimes extremely small-scale with an average farm size of around 0.8 hectares, suffers from irregular rainfall and increasing rural exodus. Rising food and fuel prices and galloping inflation are making the situation even worse. For many children in Uganda, school meals are the main meal of the day. The journey to school is often very long. Children who are weakened by malnutrition cannot always come to school every day and are more susceptible to illness. A balanced daily school meal can combat chronic malnutrition.

Day 15 Day 15
The good deed

The school and preschool children are not only taught and looked after in the classrooms of the epicenter, but they also receive a daily school meal. For many children in Uganda, the school meal is the main meal of the day. The parents are often extremely poor and can only give the children small amounts of food and only unbalanced food. Therefore, the meal in the epicenter is very important for the children!
