8 minute holiday ride for a poor child in Germany
Day 24
Empowering children living in poverty through holidays in nature

"Finally, holidays!" shouts 11-year-old Toni as she comes home from school. This year Toni is particularly excited because she is going away for the first time - to a tepee village in the Eifel. "What an adventure!", says Toni's mother too. She is a single parent and cannot afford a holiday or trips with the children on her small income. Toni, the eldest, is very burdened by her family's poverty. She feels responsible. At school she is noticed as a very quiet student who rarely laughs. She no longer invites friends home to play and is ashamed of the sparsely furnished apartment. On the upcoming educationally supervised holiday trip, children like Toni will experience great holidays with their peers, gain self-confidence and enjoy a break from their everyday worries. Toni will also come back stronger and have a lot to tell at school.

background

Get away from everyday life - into adventure. For many adults, vacation is one of the most beautiful childhood memories that is always happy to be told. Children who live with their families on the breadline often do not have such childhood memories. But these experiences would be so important for them. 2.8 million children under the age of 18 live in poverty in Germany (Bertelsmann Foundation, 2020). This often means an apartment that is too small, few opportunities to play, no quiet place to learn. During the holidays, these children often have hardly any new stimuli and experiences. This is often accompanied by feelings of powerlessness, negative self-image and experiences of exclusion. This makes it difficult to overcome poverty for a lifetime. This is where Fair.Strengths comes in: the vacation trips have a lasting effect on the children. They gain strength and self-confidence. They discover their resources and broaden their perspectives. Archery, swimming in the stream, campfires, hikes, experiential educational group games, cooking together and relaxation become lasting positive experiences and unforgettable experiences. This gives them a chance to grow up healthy and happy again. The good deed is part of the "Strong Children Cologne" project, which supports socially disadvantaged children over a period of 2-3 years. Social training, holiday trips and parent workshops are offered. The aim is to strengthen the children's personal skills and thus promote participation and equal opportunities.

The good deed

Your donation will enable children and young people to take a supervised holiday trip into nature. The tepee village is surrounded by meadows, forests and streams. With a group size of up to 12 children and young people and 3 trained educational specialists, the program is full of games, fun and excitement. Here, adventure-based educational games are played in the forest that strengthen the children's trust in other people, excursions are organized and night hikes are carried out. Many of the children see a real frog for the first time in their lives or make their first attempts at swimming in the nearby stream. The camp offers the children a sense of achievement that builds their self-confidence. In the group, the children realize: I am not alone and others feel the same way as I do. In the supervising educators, they quickly recognize people they can trust who support them and who they can confide in with their worries.
