Day 14
Human trafficking and forced prostitution in India

At the age of 15, Salila was kidnapped, sold and forced into prostitution. To help her parents, who were barely able to make ends meet, Salila accepted the stranger's job offer. She realized too late that something was wrong. She had become the victim of a human trafficker who sold her to a brothel owner. From then on, she was raped several times a day. Undercover investigators from IJM became aware of Salila. Together with the local police, they freed the girl in a risky rescue operation. In an aftercare facility, Salila was able to slowly recover from the traumatic experiences. Today, Salila sells handmade goods, lives in a small apartment and even has her own bank account. She is free.

The good deed

IJM employs investigators, lawyers and social workers who work closely with national and local authorities in the partner countries to work on individual cases. Individual cases of human rights violations are investigated and prosecuted. IJM tries to point out weaknesses in the respective justice systems in order to achieve a long-term change in the human rights situation in the partner countries. In each area of casework, IJM has the following four goals: 1. Liberation of victims, 2. Criminal prosecution of perpetrators, 3. Aftercare of victims, 4. Structural change in the legal system. An evaluation project funded by the Gates Foundation was able to demonstrate precisely this impact of our work: After 5 years of individual casework on the island of Cebu, Philippines, the availability of minors in prostitution fell by 79%. No shift effect was discernible. More information: bit.ly/1qgJ83S
