Rickshaw rides connect generations

“I had almost forgotten how wonderful the wind feels when you're riding!” exclaims Mrs. Schneider, beaming. The 87-year-old used to be an avid cyclist—but then her legs gave out. Today, she is back on a bike – but this time in a rickshaw riding through the park. Mr. Bergmann has made himself comfortable next to her. Both are wrapped up warmly in blankets and their cheeks are reddened by the fresh air. They chat, show each other their former favorite places, and wave to the children. Sitting at the back of the bike is Samira, a young woman in her early 20s who volunteers to pedal. For her, these tours are a gift – full of stories and laughter. And when the rickshaw hits a bump, it quickly turns into shared laughter, like on a small roller coaster ride. This turns a simple ride into a little adventure that opens hearts. At more than 150 locations in Germany, volunteers are helping older people and those with limited mobility, such as Ms. Schneider and Mr. Bergmann, get moving again. Every ride is a small step toward greater participation and joie de vivre!

Background

Small steps that make a difference: Practical experience shows that rickshaw trips and friendly conversations are not only enjoyable – they can also help to keep the mind and spirit healthy, thereby potentially preventing the onset of dementia. Many passengers report that the trips take their minds off things, give them new inspiration, and strengthen their sense of participation. This is all the more important given that many older people often experience the opposite: walking can become more difficult, they may feel less safe riding a bike, or they may have to give up their driver's license. This can severely restrict their mobility, independence, and sense of community. Over 6 million people in Germany are aged 80 and older (Statistisches Bundesamt 2023) and in many cases affected by immobility. Many of the approximately 7.8 million people with severe disabilities, regardless of age, are also limited in their mobility ((Statistisches Bundesamt 2022). Barrier-free opportunities for participation are particularly lacking in rural areas. The consequences: withdrawal, less joy in life, and loneliness. The elderly, people living alone, and people with mobility or sensory impairments are particularly affected by loneliness (Malteser 2024). Loneliness is now considered a health risk with proven consequences: it increases the risk of depression, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and the need for long-term care (BMFSFJ 2023; Livingston et al. 2024). But this good deed is encouraging: it is enabling 20 new locations for rickshaw services in Germany. This allows older people and those with limited mobility to participate in society again – with the wind in their hair, smiling faces and a sympathetic ear at their side. For many, it is a piece of joie de vivre that they can share with their families.

The good deed

Your donation will enable two kilometers of rickshaw rides for two elderly people. A total of 20 new locations are to be created throughout Germany, where over 3,000 additional free rickshaw rides will be possible each year. This will open up the world again for over 6,000 elderly and mobility-impaired people per year: familiar streets, blossoming fields, their favorite café from the past—and, of course, the wind in their faces. Especially for people who rarely receive visitors or hardly ever get out, such a moment becomes a ray of hope. The conversations between the seniors and the volunteers bring back memories and ensure lasting exchanges. The fresh air is good for their health and leads to a better attitude towards life. In this way, every ride helps to alleviate loneliness – and creates closeness and the feeling of “I'm right in the middle of things instead of just being there.”
